If you’re choosing a camera system in 2026, you’ll quickly run into two camps: traditional CCTV (think Hikvision-style IP cameras and an NVR) and UniFi Protect (Ubiquiti’s camera system that runs on the same platform as your network).
We install both — and we’re happy to, because both are good. The right choice depends on your property and what you want to live with for the next ten years. Here’s the honest difference.
The short answer
- UniFi Protect is brilliant when you want your cameras, network and WiFi on one platform, one app, with clever on-device AI and a very clean experience.
- Traditional CCTV (like Hikvision) is brilliant when you need a huge range of specialist cameras, very high camera counts, or the widest choice at a tight budget.
- Both record locally with no compulsory monthly fees — that’s not a UniFi-only thing, and any installer telling you otherwise is selling a cloud subscription you don’t need.
What UniFi Protect actually is
UniFi Protect is Ubiquiti’s video surveillance system. The cameras are true 4K, and instead of a separate NVR box, they record onto a surveillance-grade drive inside your UniFi console (usually a Dream Machine Pro — see our guide on the UniFi Dream Machine).
What people notice first:
- One app for everything — cameras, network and WiFi in the same place, not three different logins.
- On-device AI — it tells a person from a vehicle, reads number plates at the gate, and lets you search footage in seconds (“show me all vehicles, Tuesday afternoon”).
- No subscription — recording, AI and remote viewing are free for the life of the system.
- Footage stays on your property — on your drive, in your cabinet, not on someone else’s server.
Where they’re actually the same
Let’s clear up the myths:
- Monthly fees: neither needs one. Traditional CCTV records locally too. UniFi Protect just makes “no cloud fees” the default.
- Remote viewing: both let you watch from your phone. UniFi does it without fiddly port-forwarding.
- Local storage: both keep footage on-site, which is what you want for evidence and privacy.
Where UniFi Protect pulls ahead
- The experience. It’s genuinely the nicest system to use day-to-day — fast app, clean timeline, smart search.
- It’s one ecosystem. If we’re already doing your network, WiFi, access control and alarm on UniFi, adding Protect means everything lives together and we support it remotely.
- Smart, not just recorded. The AI cuts false alerts and makes footage actually searchable, instead of scrubbing through hours of nothing.
Where traditional CCTV still wins
We’re not going to pretend otherwise — for some jobs, Hikvision-style CCTV is the better call:
- Sheer range. There’s a camera for every strange situation — extreme zoom, thermal, ultra-low-light, specialist housings.
- Camera count and budget. For a big site that needs many cameras at the lowest cost per point, traditional CCTV often stretches further.
- Maturity. It’s a hugely established platform with deep options.
This is why we stay fluent in both, and match the system to the site rather than pushing one brand at everyone.
Built for South African conditions (either way)
Whichever you choose, the install is what makes it survive here:
- It records through load shedding — recorder and drive on a properly-sized UPS.
- It works offline — a gate camera on a dead internet line still captures everything, locally.
- Surge and lightning protection on every outdoor run — non-negotiable on the Highveld.
A cheap camera on a great install beats a great camera on a cheap install, every time.
So, which should you choose?
- Doing a whole UniFi system anyway (network, WiFi, access)? UniFi Protect is the obvious, clean choice — one platform, one app.
- Want the nicest day-to-day experience and smart search? UniFi Protect.
- Need lots of cameras, specialist lenses, or the tightest budget-per-camera on a big site? Traditional CCTV likely fits better.
- Not sure? That’s what the site assessment is for — we’ll tell you honestly which suits your property.
