Once you’ve decided to install access control, the very next question is the one everyone actually cares about: how do people get in? Tag, code, fingerprint, or phone? Each has a genuine place — and the wrong choice for your situation is the reason people prop gates open and share codes.
Here’s the honest comparison, from installers who fit all of them.
The quick verdict
- Tags / cards — best all-rounder for estates, staff and busy entrances.
- Keypads (PIN) — cheapest and simplest, best for lower-security or backup entry.
- Biometrics — highest control, best for restricted areas.
- Mobile (phone) — most convenient and flexible, great for tech-comfortable users and remote management.
Most good installs mix two or three — because different doors have different needs.
Tags & cards
A small fob or card you tap on a reader.
- Security: good. Better than a code, but a lost tag works for whoever finds it — until you delete it (which takes seconds).
- Cost: low per user.
- Convenience: high — fast tap-and-go.
- Best for: estate gates, staff entrances, tenants, anywhere with lots of users and daily traffic.
- Watch out for: tags handed around or not returned when someone leaves — good admin fixes this.
Keypads (PIN codes)
Type a code on a keypad.
- Security: lower. Codes get shared, watched over a shoulder, or written down. Fine if you change them and use them for the right points.
- Cost: lowest — nothing to issue per person.
- Convenience: decent, but a nuisance if the code is long or changes often.
- Best for: shared entrances, a backup method, gate intercoms, lower-security doors.
- Watch out for: one code everyone knows becomes “no security at all.” Use per-user codes or rotate them.
Biometrics (fingerprint / face)
The credential is a part of you.
- Security: highest — nothing to lose, lend, or copy.
- Cost: higher per reader.
- Convenience: very high once enrolled — nothing to carry. (Dusty hands or the wrong reader for the environment can cause read issues, so placement matters.)
- Best for: restricted areas, server rooms, offices, anywhere you need to know it’s definitely that person.
- Watch out for: cheap biometric readers that misread constantly — quality matters here more than anywhere.
Mobile (your phone)
Your phone is the key, via an app or Bluetooth/NFC.
- Security: good to high — phones are already protected by PINs and biometrics, and access can be granted or revoked instantly from anywhere.
- Cost: low per user (no physical credential to buy).
- Convenience: excellent for people who always have their phone — and brilliant for remote management (grant a contractor access for one afternoon without meeting them).
- Best for: modern homes and businesses, remote admin, temporary/visitor access.
- Watch out for: flat batteries and users who aren’t phone-comfortable — which is why a backup method is smart.
So which should you choose?
- Estate or complex: tags or mobile for residents, a keypad or intercom at the visitor gate.
- Family home: tags or mobile for the household, with a keypad as a simple backup.
- Office / business: tags for general staff, biometrics for restricted rooms, mobile for managers and remote control.
- Holiday home / rental: mobile shines — grant and revoke access remotely without handing over anything physical.
The golden rule: pick the method people will actually use. A high-security credential that’s annoying gets bypassed, and a bypassed system protects nobody. We match the credential to the door and to the people using it.
