Ajax comes up in almost every alarm conversation we have — and for good reason. But “everyone’s using it” isn’t a reason to spend your money, so here’s the honest version from people who install these systems for a living: what Ajax actually is, where it’s brilliant, where it isn’t, and whether it’s worth it for your property.
The short answer
- For most modern homes and estates, yes — Ajax is worth it. It’s a genuinely professional wireless system with an excellent app and reliable communications.
- It’s not the cheapest, and it shouldn’t be — a bargain-bin alarm that fails when you need it isn’t a saving.
- The install matters more than the brand. Ajax done properly is superb; Ajax thrown up carelessly wastes good hardware.
What Ajax actually is
Ajax is a professional wireless alarm system. A central hub talks to wireless devices around your property — motion sensors, door/window contacts, glass-break detectors, sirens, keypads and panic buttons — and you control the whole thing from a clean, genuinely good phone app.
The key word is professional. This isn’t a DIY toy from a hardware store — it’s the kind of system estates and businesses run, just without the mess of cables in your walls.
Why people (and installers) like it
- Wireless, so the install is clean. No chasing cables through finished walls and ceilings — a big deal in an already-built home.
- The app is excellent. Arm, disarm, check status and get instant notifications from anywhere. Most alarm apps are awful; Ajax’s isn’t.
- Reliable communications. It uses multiple paths (including cellular) so a cut phone line or dropped WiFi doesn’t leave you blind.
- Long battery life. Sensors run for years on their batteries, and the system tells you before one goes flat.
- It grows with you. Start with the essentials and add sensors, sirens or a keypad later without ripping anything out.
Where Ajax really shines
- Retrofits and occupied homes — where running new cables would mean damage and disruption.
- Estates and complexes — clean, expandable, and manageable across many points.
- Additions and outbuildings — a cottage, garage or new room brought into the system wirelessly.
The honest limitations
We’re not going to pretend it’s perfect for everyone:
- It’s a wireless system, so it depends on batteries and signal. In practice a properly designed Ajax install is extremely reliable — but “properly designed” is doing the heavy lifting in that sentence. Placement and signal checks matter.
- It costs more than a cheap wired panel. You’re paying for quality hardware and comms that actually work. For a bare-minimum budget, it’s not the cheapest route.
- It needs professional setup to be reliable. Pairing, sensor placement, zoning and communication testing are where a good install separates itself from a bad one.
Built for South African conditions
This is where a good alarm earns its money locally:
- It keeps working through load shedding — the hub and sirens run on backup batteries, and cellular communication means it can still alert you when the power and fibre are down.
- Cellular backup means a criminal cutting your phone or internet line doesn’t disable the alarm.
- It integrates with armed response — so a triggered alarm can signal a control room, not just make a noise. (There’s no compulsory monthly fee to own the system; monitoring is optional.)
Ajax vs an old wired alarm
If you’ve got a working wired alarm, you don’t necessarily need to rip it out. But if it’s ageing, unreliable, or you’re renovating anyway, Ajax usually wins on the app, the communications, the expandability and the clean install. A twenty-year-old panel with a dead battery and a siren nobody responds to isn’t really protecting you.
So, is it worth it?
- Building or renovating, or want the best wireless system? Yes — Ajax is an easy recommendation.
- Occupied home where cabling would mean damage? Yes — this is exactly what it’s for.
- Absolute rock-bottom budget, single sensor, and you’ll never expand? A basic system might do — but be honest about what you’re getting.
The brand is only half the story. The other half — sensor placement, signal design, and a proper handover — is what makes it actually protect you.
